Verse #146 of 220
Dear friends in Christ, as we journey through the #FearNot220 series, let us pause and draw strength from the timeless words of Joshua 1:7: 'Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.'
In this verse, God speaks directly to Joshua, who stands on the threshold of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. The weight of responsibility is immense—following in the footsteps of Moses, facing unknown territories, and upholding the covenant with unwavering fidelity. Yet, God's command is clear: strength and courage are not optional; they are essential, rooted in obedience to His law. It's a call to us all, reminding us that true bravery isn't about reckless abandon, but about steadfast adherence to divine truth.
Reflecting on this, I am drawn to the wisdom of St. John Chrysostom, one of our beloved Early Church Fathers. In his homilies, he often emphasized the virtue of courage in the face of trials, likening it to a soldier who remains firm in battle. Chrysostom taught that just as Joshua was exhorted to cling to the law without deviation, so too must we Christians hold fast to the teachings of Christ and His Church. 'Let us not be turned aside,' he might say, 'for in our fidelity lies our victory.' This reflection from the fourth century echoes through time, inviting us to see Joshua's story as a mirror to our own spiritual battles—whether against doubt, temptation, or the chaos of daily life.
Think about your own path, dear reader. Perhaps you're navigating a career change, mending a broken relationship, or simply striving to live out your faith in a world that often pulls us in every direction. I've known moments like these myself—times when fear whispered that deviation might be easier, that a small compromise could smooth the way. But in turning back to God's word, like Joshua, we find the courage to stay the course. It's in those gentle, real-life connections—praying the Rosary during a stressful day, seeking counsel in Confession, or sharing a meal with fellow believers—that we experience the warmth of God's promise: success not in worldly terms, but in the profound peace of alignment with His will.
So, let us embrace this exhortation today. Be strong, be very courageous, and do not turn from the path of righteousness. God is with you, just as He was with Joshua. In your faithfulness, you will find not only success but the joy of walking hand-in-hand with the Lord. Fear not, for He who calls you is faithful. May the intercession of Our Lady and the saints bolster your resolve. Onward, with hearts aflame!
