Verse #116 of 220

Brethren, gathered here in this humble stone sanctuary, where the flickering light of oil lamps casts shadows on these ancient walls, hear the words of the holy angel, spoken at the empty tomb: 'Do not be afraid!' (Matthew 28:5). Oh, what divine consolation in those simple words! As the women approached the sepulcher, trembling with grief and wonder, the messenger of God appeared, his countenance like lightning, his raiment white as snow. 'Do not be afraid,' he proclaimed, for they sought Jesus the crucified, but He was risen, as He said. Let us turn to the wisdom of our holy Fathers, as compiled in the golden chain of the Catena Aurea. Saint Jerome teaches us that the angel's words were not mere comfort but a rebuke to fear, for faith should banish all terror. The guards, those hardened soldiers, shook with dread and became as dead men, yet the devout women, though afraid, were bidden to fear not. Why? Because their fear was mingled with love for the Lord, and such fear is the beginning of wisdom, not of despair. Saint John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed preacher, expounds how the angel addresses their innermost thoughts: 'I know that you seek Jesus,' showing the tenderness of divine knowledge. He reminds them of the crucifixion not to reopen wounds, but to affirm the miracle—He who was crucified is risen! And Remigius adds that the angel's brightness signifies the splendor of the resurrected life, a light that pierces the darkness of our fears. Beloved, in this age of persecutions and trials, as we huddle in catacombs or simple churches like this, do these words not echo in your souls? You, who face the lions in the arena, or the scorn of pagans in the marketplace—do not be afraid! The Early Fathers knew well the storms of life: Augustine, in his Confessions, wrestled with inner tempests, yet found peace in God's embrace. Chrysostom, exiled and suffering, preached courage born of resurrection hope. So too, in your daily struggles—the illness that ravages the body, the betrayal of friends, the uncertainty of tomorrow—remember the empty tomb. Fear grips us when we forget that Christ has conquered death. The angel bids us not to fear because the Risen Lord goes before us into Galilee, into every shadowed corner of our lives. Think of the women: they came in sorrow, departed in joy, commissioned to announce the Good News. So must we! In the quiet of this lamp-lit gathering, let the rhythm of these words pulse in your hearts: Do not be afraid of the cross you bear, for it leads to glory. Do not fear the world's tumult, for heaven's peace awaits. Do not dread the unknown, for God knows your seeking heart. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, trust in Him who trampled death by death! Cast aside your fears like the stone rolled from the tomb. Rise with Christ, live boldly in His light, and proclaim to all: He is risen! Fear not, for God is with us. Amen. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #116of220 #Catholic
