Verse #013 of 220
"Have no dread or fear of them." (Deuteronomy 1:29)
Beloved brethren, gathered here in this humble stone sanctuary, where the flickering light of oil lamps dances upon these ancient walls like the very flames of the Holy Spirit—listen! I speak to you not with the thunder of modern contrivances, but with the simple voice of one who has pondered the sacred scrolls, as our venerable fathers did in ages past. Moses, that great prophet and leader, uttered these words to the children of Israel as they trembled at the edge of the Promised Land. The spies had returned with tales of giants, fortified cities, and peoples fierce as lions. Fear gripped their hearts, turning brave men into shadows of doubt.
Ah, but what says the divine wisdom through the mouths of the Early Church Fathers, as compiled in the golden chain of the Catena Aurea? St. John Chrysostom, that golden-tongued preacher, reminds us that fear is the chain that binds the soul, forged not by enemies without, but by unbelief within. 'Why dread ye?' Moses implores, echoing the eternal truth: God, who parted the Red Sea and rained manna from heaven, goes before you. St. Augustine, in his profound reflections, sees in these 'giants' the towering vices of the world—pride, lust, avarice—that loom over our pilgrimage. Yet, he urges, 'Do not fear them, for the Lord your God fights for you.' As Origen expounds, this is no mere historical exhortation but a spiritual battle cry: the 'them' are the principalities and powers of darkness, the temptations that assail the faithful. Fear not, for Christ, the true Moses, has conquered them on the cross!
And you, my dear ones, in this vale of tears—what are your giants? The uncertainties of daily bread, the tempests of illness, the arrows of persecution from a world grown cold to the faith? Perhaps it is the whisper of doubt in the quiet hours, or the roar of societal pressures that bid you compromise your soul. I see it in your eyes, lit by these humble lamps—the weariness of laborers, the sorrows of mothers, the burdens of the afflicted. But hear me: as St. Basil the Great teaches, fear dissolves in the light of divine providence. Remember the Israelites; their dread led to forty years of wandering. Will you wander in the desert of anxiety, or march boldly into the land flowing with milk and honey?
Unplug, brethren, from the clamor of fears that amplify like echoes in a cavern. Return to the simplicity of trust, as in these early days of the Church, when martyrs faced lions with songs on their lips. God is not distant; He is here, in the Eucharist, in the fellowship of saints, in the whisper of prayer. Have no dread! Let faith be your shield, hope your sword. Trust in the Lord, who turns giants into dust and fears into forgotten dreams. Arise, then, and fear not—for the victory is already won in Christ!
