Verse #173 of 220
Dear friends in Christ, as we journey through our #FearNot220 series, let's pause and reflect on the profound words from Luke 10:20: '...do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.' Oh, what a gentle reminder from our Lord Jesus Himself! In a world that often measures worth by power, achievements, and visible triumphs, He invites us to shift our gaze upward—to the eternal inscription of our names in the Book of Life.
Imagine the disciples returning from their mission, buzzing with excitement over the demons they cast out and the miracles they witnessed. It's easy to get caught up in those moments, isn't it? We all have our own 'spirits' we conquer—perhaps a challenging project at work, a personal victory over temptation, or even a moment of influence in our communities. But Jesus, in His infinite wisdom, redirects their joy. Not to diminish their efforts, but to elevate it to something far greater: the assurance of salvation, the promise of heaven.
This echoes beautifully in the reflections of the Early Church Fathers. St. Ambrose, that wise bishop of Milan, pondered this verse in his writings, emphasizing how our true rejoicing should stem not from temporal powers or spiritual gifts, but from the grace of God that enrolls us as citizens of heaven. He reminds us that even the apostles' authority over evil spirits was a gift, not a personal boast, pointing always back to the Giver. It's a balanced wisdom that grounds us: our spiritual battles are important, but they pale in comparison to the eternal love that has claimed us for God's kingdom.
In our everyday lives, this hits home so gently. Think of the busy parent juggling endless tasks, finding small wins in a chaotic day, or the student celebrating a hard-earned grade. Or perhaps you're like me, sometimes getting swept up in the thrill of a successful ministry moment or a kind word shared that touches a heart. These are good things! But amid the hustle, Jesus whispers: Rejoice not in the doing, but in the being—being known, loved, and written into eternity by the hand of God. It's a real-life anchor, isn't it? When disappointments come, when our 'powers' fail us, we can still lift our hearts in joy because our names are secure in heaven.
So, beloved, let's embrace this today. Fear not the fleeting highs and lows of earthly victories. Instead, let your heart swell with the unshakeable gladness that comes from knowing you're inscribed in the heavens. Draw near to the sacraments, immerse in prayer, and live with that heavenly perspective. You are cherished, you are named, you are His. Rejoice in that eternal truth, and let it fuel your every step. May the peace of Christ fill you abundantly!
