Verse #114 of 220

🌊 In the midst of life's tempests, when waves crash and winds howl, we often find ourselves gripped by fear. But listen to the voice that pierced the storm-tossed night on the Sea of Galilee: '...do not be afraid.' (Matthew 14:27) These words from our Lord Jesus Christ, spoken as He walked upon the waters to His frightened disciples, echo through the ages, a divine assurance that He is with us, even in the darkest hours. Dear friends in faith, imagine the scene: Peter and the others, seasoned fishermen, terrified by the gale, mistaking their Savior for a ghost. Yet Jesus doesn't rebuke their fear; He calms it with His presence. 'Take courage! It is I.' In this moment, we see the heart of God—compassionate, ever-near, inviting us to step out in trust. This isn't just a biblical tale; it's a blueprint for our lives. Reflecting on this, the Early Church Father St. John Chrysostom beautifully reminds us in his homilies on Matthew that Christ's command to 'not be afraid' is rooted in His identity as the great 'I AM.' Chrysostom urges us to remember that the One who tamed the sea is the same who governs our souls. He writes that fear arises when we forget God's sovereignty, but faith restores our peace, turning chaos into calm. How profound! Just as the waves obeyed Him then, so too can the storms of our hearts submit to His gentle rule. In our everyday world, these words resonate deeply. Perhaps you're facing a health crisis, like a dear parishioner I know who battled illness with unyielding prayer, whispering 'do not be afraid' through chemotherapy sessions. Or maybe it's financial uncertainty, job loss, or the quiet anxieties of raising a family in turbulent times. I've seen it in the eyes of young parents at Mass, worried about the future. Yet, in these real-life gales, Jesus extends His hand, just as He did to Peter sinking in doubt. He pulls us up, reminding us that faith isn't the absence of fear, but the courage to walk forward despite it. Beloved, let's embrace this truth today. When doubts assail, recall the Sea of Galilee and let Christ's voice drown out the noise. You're not alone in the boat—He is there, saying, 'It is I.' Step out in faith, trust His presence, and watch fear flee. May this verse be your anchor: do not be afraid, for the Lord is with you always. #FearNot220 #114of220 #Catholic
