Verse #135 of 220
Dear friends in Christ, as we journey through our #FearNot220 series, let's pause and soak in the liberating words of St. Paul in Romans 8:15: '...you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, “Abba, Father!”' Oh, what a profound assurance this is! In a world that often binds us with chains of anxiety, doubt, and uncertainty, God reminds us that we are not slaves to fear. Instead, we are beloved children, adopted into His eternal family, empowered by the Holy Spirit to call out to our Heavenly Father with intimate trust.
This verse echoes deeply in the hearts of the Early Church Fathers. St. John Chrysostom, that golden-tongued preacher of Antioch, reflected on this passage with such warmth, emphasizing how the Spirit of adoption frees us from the servile fear of the old law. He wrote in his homilies on Romans that this spirit is not one of dread, like a slave before a harsh master, but of filial love, where we approach God as dear children to a loving parent. Chrysostom urges us to live in this freedom, casting aside the fears that paralyze us and embracing the boldness of sons and daughters. Isn't it beautiful how the wisdom of the Fathers bridges the centuries, speaking directly to our souls today?
In our everyday lives, this truth hits home gently yet powerfully. Think of those moments when fear creeps in—like the worry over a loved one's health, the stress of financial burdens, or the unease of an uncertain future. Perhaps you're a parent fretting over your child's path, or a young professional battling imposter syndrome at work. These are the 'spirits of slavery' Paul warns against, the fears that try to drag us back into bondage. But remember, dear one, you've been given something far greater: the Spirit of adoption. In the quiet of prayer, in the sacraments, especially in the Eucharist where we commune with our Father, we find release. I've seen it in my own life—times when kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament melted away my anxieties, replacing them with a peaceful cry of 'Abba!' It's in these real, tangible connections that faith becomes our anchor.
So, let us not fall back into fear, but rise in the confidence of our divine adoption. You are cherished, you are free, you are called to live boldly in God's love. Turn to Him today, whisper 'Abba,' and watch fear dissolve in the light of His grace. Fear not, for you are His! #FearNot220 #135of220 #Catholic
