Verse #049 of 220

Brothers and sisters, gathered here in this humble stone sanctuary, where the flickering light of oil lamps dances upon these ancient walls, listen to the voice of sacred Scripture echoing through the ages: 'Do not be afraid of this executioner...' (2 Maccabees 7:29). Ah, what words of fire and fortitude! Spoken by a mother to her youngest son, amid the torments of Antiochus, as her seven boys faced death for the faith of their fathers. She, undaunted, urges him: Fear not the blade, the rack, the flame—prove worthy of your kin, embrace the martyr's crown, that in God's mercy, we may all be reunited! Oh, beloved, let us draw deeply from the wells of our holy Fathers, those luminous souls who illuminated the Church in her infancy. As in the Catena Aurea, where the golden chain of commentary binds us to truth—though this verse hails from the Maccabean saga, its spirit resonates with the Fathers' teachings on martyrdom and divine providence. Behold St. John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed preacher, who thunders against the fears that bind the soul: 'What is death to the faithful? A mere passage, a sleep from which we awaken in glory!' He bids us remember how the Maccabean mother, like Abraham offering Isaac, trusted God's promise beyond the grave. And St. Augustine, in his profound reflections on suffering, reminds us: 'The executioner may slay the body, but he cannot touch the soul that clings to God.' In his City of God, he contrasts the fleeting tyrannies of earth with the eternal kingdom, urging us to scorn the threats of mortals, for 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.' These Fathers, drawing from the wellspring of Scripture, unfold the mystery: Fear of the executioner is but illusion, a shadow cast by the enemy to dim our faith. The mother in Maccabees saw beyond the torturer's grimace to the face of God, who turns even death into victory. Tertullian, that bold apologist, echoes this in his exhortations to martyrs: 'The blood of Christians is seed!' From it springs the Church, unbowed, unbreakable. Now, dear ones, let this truth pierce your hearts in the midst of your daily trials. In our age, the executioner wears many masks—not always the tyrant's sword, but the subtle blades of doubt, the chains of worldly cares, the flames of temptation. Perhaps you face ridicule for your faith at work, or the ache of illness that whispers despair. Maybe the storms of family strife or the shadows of financial ruin loom like Antiochus himself. Do not fear! As the Fathers teach, these are but trials to refine your soul, like gold in the furnace. Remember the mother's gaze upon her son—steady, loving, fixed on eternity. So too, fix your eyes on Christ, who conquered death itself. In this unplugged hour, without the clamor of the world, hear the still, small voice: God is with you. Trust Him as the Maccabees did, as the Fathers exhorted. Let not fear paralyze you, but faith propel you forward. Embrace your cross, prove worthy of the saints, and in God's mercy, you shall rise! Amen. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #049of220 #Catholic
