Verse #020 of 220
🌟 #FearNot220 Verse 20: "Be brave and steadfast; have no fear or dread of them..." (Deuteronomy 31:6) 🌟
Dear friends in Christ, in the tapestry of our faith, woven with threads of divine promise and human frailty, we find this powerful exhortation from Deuteronomy. As Moses prepared the Israelites for the challenges ahead, he reminded them—and us—that true bravery isn't born of our own strength, but from the unshakeable presence of God. "Be strong and courageous," the full verse implores. "Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." What a comforting balm for our often anxious hearts!
In the warm embrace of our Catholic tradition, we turn to the wisdom of the Early Church Fathers to deepen our understanding. St. Augustine, that luminous doctor of the Church, reflected profoundly on fear in his Confessions. He wrote of how our fears stem from attachment to temporal things, urging us to anchor our souls in the eternal God. "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you," he professed. Imagine Augustine, wrestling with his own doubts in the garden, only to hear the child's voice calling him to "take up and read"—a pivotal moment of surrender that transformed fear into steadfast faith. Just as he did, we too can let go of dread, knowing God's grace fortifies us against the 'them' in our lives—be they external adversaries or inner demons.
This verse speaks gently to our everyday realities, doesn't it? Think of the young parent facing an uncertain job market, the student battling anxiety over exams, or the elderly soul confronting loneliness. In these moments, the 'them' might be financial woes, health scares, or the weight of global unrest. I've seen it in my own life: during a time of personal loss, when grief threatened to overwhelm, this verse whispered hope. It reminded me that God walks beside us, just as He did with the Israelites through the wilderness. We are not alone; His companionship turns our stumbling steps into a dance of trust.
So, beloved, let us embrace this call to bravery today. In the sacraments, in prayer, in community—find your strength renewed. Be steadfast in charity, brave in forgiveness, and fearless in love. God is with you, always. Fear not, for He who parted the seas will guide you through your storms. May the intercession of Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom, and the saints embolden your heart.
