Verse #080 of 220
Brethren, gathered in this humble stone sanctuary, where the flickering light of oil lamps dances upon these ancient walls, hear the word of the Lord as it was spoken to the prophet Jeremiah: 'Have no fear before them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord' (Jeremiah 1:8). Ah, what a divine assurance, whispered from the throne of heaven to a trembling soul! Let us linger here, in the quiet glow of these lamps, and unfold the depths of this sacred verse, drawing from the wisdom of our holy fathers of old.
As the great Origen teaches in the Catena, this command to Jeremiah is no mere encouragement but a divine imperative, rooting out the weeds of fear that choke the prophet's heart. For Jeremiah, young and hesitant, is called to stand before kings and nations, to proclaim judgment and mercy alike. 'Have no fear before them'—before whom? Before the mighty, the proud, the persecutors who wield swords and scorn. Yet God, in His infinite might, promises presence and deliverance. St. Jerome echoes this, reminding us that the prophet's fear is human frailty, but God's 'I am with you' is the unbreakable shield, forged in eternity. And Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed preacher, would urge us to see in Jeremiah's commissioning our own: for are we not all prophets in this age, called to witness amid the tempests of life?
Oh, my dear ones, reflect deeply! In the commentaries compiled by the angelic doctor, we find Bede the Venerable expounding how this verse mirrors the Incarnation—God with us, Emmanuel, banishing fear through His very presence. Just as Jeremiah faced the idolatry of Israel, so we confront the idols of our day: the tyrannies of doubt, the chains of worldly anxiety, the shadows of persecution. Augustine, in his profound reflections, likens fear to a thief in the night, stealing our peace, but God's word is the dawn that scatters it. He who formed Jeremiah in the womb (as the verse preceding tells) forms us too, equipping us for battles we deem impossible.
Now, let us bring this eternal truth into the rhythm of our daily struggles. You, the laborer toiling under an unjust master—have no fear before him, for the Lord is your deliverer. You, the mother weeping over wayward children—fear not their rebellion, for God walks beside you. In this unplugged age, stripped of modern clamor, we return to the simplicity of faith: no amplifiers to boost our voices, only the Holy Spirit amplifying our hearts. Amid financial woes, illnesses that ravage the body, or the isolation of faith in a skeptical world, remember Jeremiah's hesitation. He feared, yet obeyed, and nations trembled at God's word through him. The fathers teach us: fear is the devil's whisper, but trust in God's presence is the soul's triumphant song.
Beloved, in this intimate gathering, lit by these humble flames, let us cast off every terror. As Cyril of Alexandria notes, God's 'I am with you' is the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham, to Moses, now to us through Christ. Draw near to the Eucharist, that living presence, and let it fortify you. Face the 'them' in your life—the adversaries, the doubts, the storms—with bold hearts. Trust God, for He who delivered Jeremiah from the pit will deliver you from every snare.
Go forth, then, fearless in His love! Proclaim His truth in word and deed, and watch fear flee before the light of faith. Amen.
