Verse #215 of 220
Beloved brethren, gathered here in this humble stone sanctuary, where the flickering light of oil lamps dances upon these ancient walls, listen to the words of the Apostle Jude, echoing through the ages: '...to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy.' (Jude 1:24) Ah, what a promise! What divine assurance in these shadowed times!
Let us delve into this sacred verse, drawing from the wisdom of our holy Fathers, as compiled in the golden chain of commentary. St. Augustine, that luminous doctor of grace, teaches us that this 'keeping from falling' is no mere human effort, but the mighty work of God Himself. For who among us, frail as we are, can stand unaided amidst the tempests of temptation? Augustine reminds us: 'It is God who works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.' He preserves us, not by our strength, but by His omnipotent hand, shielding us from the snares of the evil one.
And behold, St. John Chrysostom, the golden-mouthed preacher, expounds with fiery eloquence: This presentation 'blameless' before God's glory is the culmination of our earthly pilgrimage. Imagine, dear souls, standing faultless in that radiant presence, not by our merits, but through the blood of the Lamb! Chrysostom urges: 'Let not the fear of stumbling deter you; trust in Him who upholds the stars and sustains the feeble.' He connects this to the doxology of Jude, a hymn of praise that lifts our eyes from earthly woes to heavenly triumph.
From the Catena Aurea, we glean further from Bede the Venerable: God 'keeps us from falling' by His prevenient grace, fortifying our steps on the narrow path. And Origen, with mystical insight, sees in this verse the eschatological joy—'with rejoicing'—a foretaste of the eternal banquet where tears are wiped away.
Now, brethren, let us bring this truth into the struggles of our daily lives. In these perilous days of the early Church, amid persecutions and heresies, how often do we falter? The merchant tempted by dishonest gain, the mother weary from ceaseless toil, the youth assailed by passions of the flesh—do we not all stumble on the rocky road? Yet, hear me: God is able! He who parted the seas and raised the dead can keep you upright. When doubts assail like arrows in the night, when sorrows weigh heavy as millstones, cling to Him. Remember the martyrs, steadfast in faith, presented blameless through divine power.
In our simple gatherings, without the clamor of the world, we find strength in this unplugged communion—voices raised in prayer, hearts united in the Spirit. Let not fear grip you, for He promises joy unspeakable!
Therefore, I beseech you: Trust in this Almighty Keeper! Surrender your frailties to His care. Walk boldly, knowing He will present you spotless, rejoicing in glory. Amen! Let this be your anchor in the storm.
