Verse #050 of 220

Dear friends in Christ, as we journey through our #FearNot220 series, let us draw strength from the words of 2 Maccabees 8:16: '...nor to fear the large number...' In this powerful verse, Judas Maccabeus rallies his small band of faithful warriors against a vast army of oppressors. Outnumbered and outmatched by human standards, they are called to trust not in their own might, but in the providence of God, who turns the tide for those who stand firm in faith. Oh, how this resonates with the timeless wisdom of our Catholic heritage! Reflecting on such courage, St. John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed Father of the Early Church, reminds us in his homilies that true victory lies not in numbers or earthly power, but in the purity of heart and reliance on divine grace. He teaches that even when the world seems arrayed against us—like a mighty host—we must remember that 'one with God is a majority.' Just as the Maccabees faced overwhelming odds to preserve their faith, so too did the early Christians under persecution, proving that God's favor outshines any multitude. In our own lives, don't we often feel this way? Perhaps you're facing a daunting challenge at work, where deadlines pile up like an invading army, or maybe in your family, where misunderstandings multiply and harmony feels outnumbered. Or think of those quiet battles within—doubts, anxieties, or temptations that seem too numerous to count. I've been there, staring down what feels like an insurmountable 'large number' of obstacles, wondering if my efforts could possibly make a difference. Yet, in these moments, the Maccabean spirit whispers: Fear not! God doesn't count heads; He weighs hearts. Turn to Him in prayer, perhaps through the Rosary or a quiet moment before the Blessed Sacrament, and watch how He multiplies your small faithfulness into something extraordinary. Beloved, let this be our encouragement today: You are never truly outnumbered when the Lord is your ally. Step forward with Maccabean boldness, trusting that the God who delivered His people of old will do the same for you. Fear not the large number—embrace the infinite power of His love! May the intercession of the Maccabean martyrs strengthen us all. #FearNot220 #050of220 #Catholic
