Verse #010 of 220
Beloved brethren, gathered in this humble stone sanctuary, where the flickering light of oil lamps dances upon these ancient walls, hear the words of sacred Scripture: '...do not be afraid of them.' (Numbers 14:9) Ah, these words, spoken by Joshua and Caleb amidst the wilderness wanderings, echo through the ages like a clarion call from the throne of God Himself!
Let us delve into the depths of this divine exhortation, drawing from the golden chain of our holy Fathers, as compiled in the Catena Aurea. St. Ambrose teaches us that these giants of Canaan symbolize the towering vices and temptations that loom over our souls—pride, lust, greed, those monstrous foes that seek to devour the promised land of our hearts. Do not fear them, he urges, for the Lord is with us! St. John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed preacher, reminds us how the spies' fear blinded them to God's mighty deeds—the parted sea, the manna from heaven. 'Why tremble before men,' he thunders, 'when the Almighty fights for you?' And blessed Augustine, in his profound reflections, sees in this verse a mirror of our spiritual warfare: the 'them' are not merely earthly adversaries, but the principalities and powers of darkness. Yet, fear not! For Christ, the true Joshua, has conquered them all on the cross.
Oh, my dear ones, in this dim-lit church, where the air is thick with incense and the whispers of saints, let us apply this truth to the trials of our daily pilgrimage. You, the weary laborer toiling under the sun, facing the giants of poverty and injustice—do not be afraid! You, the mother cradling her child in the night, besieged by worries of sickness and want—fear not! In our age, as in the days of Moses, we encounter our own Canaans: the mocking crowds that scorn our faith, the tempests of doubt that rage within, the shadows of persecution that threaten our peace. The Fathers bid us remember: these 'giants' are but grasshoppers before the Lord. As Origen expounds, the bread of the land—the Eucharist, our heavenly sustenance—devours fear itself, nourishing us for the battle.
Think upon the martyrs of old, who faced lions and flames without flinching, echoing Joshua's cry. St. Gregory Nazianzen warns that fear is the devil's snare, binding us from entering God's rest. But we, baptized into Christ's victory, are called to boldness! In the quiet of this sacred space, unplugged from the world's clamor, let the rhythm of these words pulse in your veins: God goes before you. He is your shield, your exceedingly great reward.
Therefore, brothers and sisters, rise up! Cast off the chains of timidity. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, for He who led Israel through the desert will guide you through every valley. Fear not them—be it men, demons, or the storms of life—for the battle is the Lord's! Amen.
