"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice." (Philippians 4:4) Beloved brethren, gathered here in this humble stone sanctuary, where the flickering light of oil lamps casts shadows on these ancient walls, let us turn our hearts to the words of the Apostle Paul, echoing from his chains in Rome. Oh, how they resound! 'Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.' Not once, but twice he commands it, as if to awaken our slumbering souls from the torpor of worldly cares. Draw near, my children, and hear the wisdom of the Fathers who have gone before us. Saint John Chrysostom, that golden-mouthed preacher, teaches us in the Catena that this joy is no fleeting emotion, no mere cheer of the flesh, but a profound delight rooted in the Lord Himself. 'Rejoice,' he says, 'not in the things of this world, which pass away like mist before the sun, but in God, who is unchanging and eternal.' For Paul wrote these words amid persecution, imprisoned and facing death—yet his spirit soared! As Chrysostom expounds, 'He who rejoices in the Lord finds joy even in tribulation, for the Lord is our strength, our refuge, our very life.' And behold, Saint Augustine, the great bishop of Hippo, adds his voice: 'This rejoicing is the fruit of faith, a foretaste of heavenly bliss. It is not dependent on circumstances, but on the indwelling of Christ.' In the Catena, he reminds us that the Apostle repeats 'Rejoice' to emphasize its urgency, lest we forget amid our trials. For what are our sufferings compared to the glory that awaits? As the Fathers unite in chorus, this joy is a weapon against despair, a light piercing the darkness of sin and sorrow. Ah, but let us make this truth our own, in the struggles of our daily pilgrimage. You, weary laborer, bent under the yoke of toil—rejoice, for the Lord sustains you! You, afflicted by illness or loss, your heart heavy as these stone pillars—rejoice, for in Christ, suffering becomes a path to sanctity! In this unplugged age of ours, before the clamor of the world drowns out the still small voice, remember: joy is not found in riches or power, but in surrender to Him who conquered death. The Fathers bid us: cast off anxiety, for as Paul continues, 'The Lord is at hand.' In poverty, in plenty; in peace, in peril—rejoice always! O faithful ones, let this be our resolve: to trust God with childlike abandon. He who parted the seas and raised the dead will not abandon you. Rejoice, then, and let your joy be a testament to the world! Amen. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #183of220 #Catholic
